Discover these safety tips to keep yourself and your loved ones protected this season.<\/p>\n<h2>Ready your home<\/h2>\n<p>Decorating your home for the holidays can be a joyous tradition, but it also introduces many potential safety risks. On average, there are roughly <strong>160 Christmas decorating-related injuries<\/strong> <strong>each day<\/strong> during the holiday season. (CPSC)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep decorations <em>at least 3 feet<\/em> from heat sources such as fireplaces and candles.<\/li>\n<li>Store batteries safely in their original packaging <em>away from the reach<\/em> of children and pets to prevent potential choking hazards.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid overloading outlets<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">;\u00a0<em>never<\/em> run them under rugs, furniture, or<\/span>\u00a0open walking areas.<\/li>\n<li><em>Always<\/em> turn off your decorations when you leave your home or sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are in working condition.<\/li>\n<li>Switch off space heaters when you leave a room; <strong>space heaters are the leading cause of home fires<\/strong>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/education-and-research\/research\/nfpa-research\/fire-statistical-reports\/heating-equipment#:~:text=Heating%20equipment%20is%20a%20leading%20cause%20of%20fires%20in%20U.S.%20homes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NFPA<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Prepare for the drive<\/h2>\n<p>Winter driving can be hazardous, with the National Safety Council(NSC) estimating that <strong>131 people may die<\/strong> on U.S. roads during this Christmas Day holiday period.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Test your battery, your battery power drops as the temperature does.<\/li>\n<li>Utilize winter tires or all-season tires, and regularly check tire pressure, which also drops as the temperature does.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your gas tank <em>at least<\/em> half full in the event of a gas line freeze.<\/li>\n<li>Remove dirt, ice, snow, and other debris from your windshield, sensors, and rearview cameras.<\/li>\n<li>When heating up your car, <strong>do not<\/strong> leave a running vehicle inside your garage, especially with a closed garage door.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>While you travel<\/h2>\n<p>Visibility and road conditions are always changing in the winter, you must be ready to face obstacles that might arise at any point. Each year, <strong>24% of weather-related crashes occur on snowy, slushy, or icy pavement<\/strong>.
