{"id":2220,"date":"2018-04-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-04-03T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.awjlaw.com\/2018\/04\/03\/georgias-texting-laws\/"},"modified":"2026-01-12T15:32:04","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T15:32:04","slug":"georgias-texting-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.awjlaw.com\/blog\/georgias-texting-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia\u2019s Texting Laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), \u201cDistracted driving is dangerous, claiming 3,477 lives in 2015 alone.\u201d The agency continues, \u201cDistracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system \u2013 anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While there are many forms of distracted driving, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awjlaw.com\/marietta\/car-accident-lawyer\/texting-while-driving\/\">texting while driving<\/a> is by far the most dangerous because it takes your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel, and your mind of the critical task of driving. So, where does the State of Georgia stand on texting while driving? On July 1, 2010, Georgia law prohibited ALL TEXTING WHILE DRIVING. To read the law for yourself, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.ga.gov\/legislation\/25889\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HERE.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 align=\"center\">Driver Inattention: Key Cause in Most Car Accidents<\/h2>\n<p>From switching to Bluetooth to listen to music, to eating fast food, to using an iPod, to driver fatigue, to cell phones and everything in between, Georgia drivers have enough distractions behind the wheel. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gahighwaysafety.org\/hands-free-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Governor\u2019s Office of Highway Safety in Georgia<\/a>, \u201cnow new national data is showing driver inattention is a key cause in most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awjlaw.com\/marietta\/car-accident-lawyer\/\">crashes<\/a> and near crashes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to a 2006 study of real-world driver behavior, distraction, and crash factors about 80-percent of crashes were caused by some form of distraction \u2013 such as cell phone use or being tired \u2013 occurring within seconds of the incident,\u201d says GOHS. Given that information, it\u2019s no wonder why Georgia enacted a law strictly prohibiting texting while driving <em>for all ages.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As of this writing, <em>all drivers<\/em> are strictly prohibited from reading, writing or sending text messages while behind the wheel.
